NOW WE CAN ALL BREATH EASY...

You may be aware of new air quality standards for wood burning products manufactured after 2022. These standards will be applied in both Europe and the UK and aim to reduce the emissions from wood burning stoves.

SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves are designed to reduce particulate emissions (PM) emissions by burning wood more efficiently and completely.

Energy Innovation support the SIA Ecodesign Ready scheme that helps you easily tell which stoves meet the forthcoming standards for ultra-low emissions. Stoves that bear the SIA label have been independently tested by HETAS to verify they meet stringent standards.

SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves can reduce particulate emissions by 90% compared to an open fire and 80% compared to an old stove.

Energy Innovation are here to help you with useful information and the latest advice to ensure you comply with these new government standards.

The benefits of an Ecodesign ready stove

• Approximately 70% cheaper to run per hour than an open fire.

• Uses Five logs over 5 hours

• 90% less particulate emissions compared to an open fire

CLEAN AIR STRATEGY 2019

There has been some confusion surrounding the Government’s 2019 Clean Air Strategy with regards to fires and in particular, wood burning stoves. We’d like to clear up any misinterpretation by answering some common questions about the products that we stock.

Q. Are they banning stoves and fires?
A. No, not at all. The new legislation states however that all new stove or fire sales from 2022 need to be of an Ecodesign model. Please be assured our products comply with this design.

Q. Are they banning the burning of wood or solid fuels?
A. The Strategy does intimate at a ban of certain fuels, i.e. high sulphur content house coals, and wet wood. You are encouraged to use more efficient ‘ready to burn’ wood fuels which we can help you with.

Q. Can I keep using my existing stoves?
A. Yes – The Clean Air Strategy does not say there will be a ban on the use of wood or multi-fuel appliances, so you don’t need to modify your appliances. We recommend that you use quality dry ‘ready to burn’ wood or quality smokeless fuels.

Q. What does Ecodesign mean?
A. Any product bearing the Ecodesign Ready label meets or exceeds forthcoming stringent EU targets for emissions. These products are the next generation of clean burning, low emission fires, and as such have been recognised as a key part of the Clean Air Strategy by DEFRA.

Q. How do I know which stoves are Ecodesign ready?
A. You can easily see that our stoves meet the Ecodesign targets thanks to the SIA Ecodesign ready Label they display. The Stove Industry Alliance’s Ecodesign Ready Scheme independently verifies each stove to meet these emission targets.
